LoopStringLoopString

Raspberry Pi Industrial Monitoring

Modbus TCP / RTU + Siemens S7 + MQTT industrial monitoring on a Raspberry Pi. Edge PID, HACCP-grade compliance reports, browser dashboard — sits alongside your existing PLCs and SCADA without an integrator quote.

Scope: monitoring + slow-loop control, not hard real-time

LoopString runs on Linux on a Pi. We're great at second-scale monitoring and slow control loops — temperature, humidity, CO₂, pressure, motor on/off. We are NOT a hard-real-time safety controller. Keep PLCs in their job (interlocks, e-stops, sub-100ms control) and use LoopString as the monitoring + alarming + dashboard + compliance layer on top.

Industrial protocols

Modbus TCP

Ethernet Modbus for modern PLCs, soft starters, VFDs, energy meters

First-class part library entry — drop in the IP + slave ID + register and the Configurator reads it.

Modbus RTU (RS485)

Serial Modbus for legacy PLCs + industrial controllers

USB-to-RS485 adapter on the Pi; first-class library entry.

Siemens S7

S7-1200 / S7-1500 PLCs via Snap7 driver

Read/write DB blocks via snap7-py on the Pi.

MQTT (incl. Sparkplug B)

Pub/sub bridges from existing OT brokers + edge gateways

mosquitto local broker on the Pi + Configurator subscribes.

HTTP / REST

Modern PLCs + custom industrial gateways exposing JSON

Function nodes call arbitrary REST APIs from the Pi.

OPC-UA

(Roadmap) — first-class OPC-UA part library entry

On the integration roadmap; contact founders@loopstring.io if it gates a deal.

Key Takeaways

  • Modbus TCP / RTU and Siemens S7 are first-class parts in the library — wire a Pi alongside existing PLCs.
  • Edge-PID loops + alerts + duty-cycle tracking run on the Pi locally — process monitoring survives ISP outages.
  • HACCP / FDA / USDA-grade PDF compliance reports + tamper-resistant activity log out of the box.
  • Cloud dashboard with Tailscale tunnel — no DMZ engineering, no SSL certs, no port-forwarding.
  • Sits alongside Ignition / SCADA installs as a lightweight monitoring + dashboard layer.
